New Zealand have won five of the six matches these two sides have finished. So why does everyone talk about the one Afghanistan won? Because it was a thrashing. New Zealand were bowled out for 75 in Guyana. Their World Cup was over a week later.
This Afghanistan National Cricket Team Vs New Zealand National Cricket Team Timeline covers every meeting from 2015 to October 2026. You get scores, venues, line-ups, records and the stories behind them. Every figure was checked against ESPNcricinfo, the ICC and match reports.
One fun fact before we start. All six finished games came at a World Cup. They have never played a bilateral series.

2015: A World Cup Debut at McLean Park
Afghanistan were playing their first World Cup, against the hosts, on 8 March 2015 in Napier. Daniel Vettori took 4 for 18 and Afghanistan sank to 59 for 6. 2021: Boult Ends India’s Dream
On 7 November 2021 in Abu Dhabi, Najibullah’s 73 off 48 balls lifted Afghanistan to 124 for 8. Trent Boult took 3 for 17. Williamson (40 not out) and Devon Conway (36 not out) chased it down in 18.1 overs. New Zealand won by eight wickets, and the result knocked India out of the T20 World Cup.

2023: Chennai, Latham and Phillips
New Zealand were 110 for 4 on 18 October 2023. Then Glenn Phillips (71) and Tom Latham (68) added 144 for the fifth wicket, helped by dropped catches. New Zealand made 288 for 6. 2024 (September): The Test That Never Was
The first Test between the two sides was due at Greater Noida from 9 to 13 September 2024. Rain and a wet outfield meant no toss was ever held. It was only the eighth men’s Test ever abandoned without a ball bowled.
2026: Seifert Settles the Score
On 8 February 2026 in Chennai, Gulbadin Naib hit 63 off 35 balls and Afghanistan made 182 for 6. Mujeeb Ur Rahman then removed Finn Allen and Rachin Ravindra early. Expert Insight: What the Numbers Tell Us
This is our editorial view, based on the scorecards above.
Pace worked for New Zealand. Spin worked for Afghanistan. In 2021, four New Zealand pacers took seven wickets. In 2024, Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi took six wickets between them, and Farooqi took the other four.
Conditions decide a lot. The 2023 Chennai pitch was slow, and strokes were hard to play. The Guyana pitch in 2024 helped bowlers too. Both games stayed low and tight, which suits Afghanistan’s spinners.
New Zealand’s depth is the real gap. In 2023 they were 110 for 4 and still made 288. That kind of recovery is what has kept Afghanistan from a second win.
Our Review
Rating: 4 out of 5. On paper this is a lopsided rivalry. In practice, it has produced a rescue knock, a record chase and a famous upset. We would watch the next game. We would also hope that the next Test actually gets a toss.
