Ninety matches. Sixty-five wins for the Black Caps. Twenty for the Tigers. Three draws and two washouts. That is the New Zealand National Cricket Team Vs Bangladesh National Cricket Team Timeline in one breath.
The numbers lean one way. The story does not. Bangladesh have beaten New Zealand in a Test at Mount Maunganui. They have knocked the Kiwis out of a Champions Trophy. They have won an ODI series 4-0. And in April 2026, they won another one at home.
This article walks you through all of it, era by era. You will meet the players, the shocks and the records. Every number was checked against ESPNcricinfo, the ICC and other match records. The language is simple. And yes, there are a few jokes.

Rivalry: Key Players and Memorable Performances (Era-Wise Till 2026)
Era 1: 1990–2008, The Black Caps in Charge
Early on, this was a mismatch. New Zealand were established. Bangladesh were new.
- May 1999, Chelmsford. New Zealand were Bangladesh’s first-ever World Cup opponents. Geoff Allott, Chris Cairns and Gavin Larsen took three wickets each. Bangladesh made 116. New Zealand chased it in 33 overs.
- December 2001. The first Tests, in Hamilton and Wellington. New Zealand won both by an innings.
- September 2002, Colombo. Shane Bond took 4/21 in the Champions Trophy. Bangladesh were all out for 77.
- 2003 and 2007 World Cups. Craig McMillan scored 75 at Kimberley. In Antigua, captain Stephen Fleming hit an unbeaten century and New Zealand won by nine wickets.
- 2004 and 2008 Tests. New Zealand won five of the six Tests across these tours. The Chattogram Test in October 2008 was close. New Zealand chased 317 and won by three wickets.
Era 2: 2010–2013, The Tigers Grow Their Teeth
Then the tide turned a little.
- October 2010. Bangladesh beat New Zealand 4-0 in a five-match ODI series at home. It was their first series win over a full-strength Test nation. Shakib Al Hasan hit 106 in the fourth ODI. Kane Williamson answered with 108, his first ODI hundred, in a losing cause. Bangladesh won the fifth ODI by just three runs.
- October 2013. Bangladesh won the ODI series 3-0 again. Both Tests were drawn. Mominul Haque hit 181 in Chattogram, then the highest score by a Bangladesh batter against New Zealand. The Black Caps won the lone T20I by 15 runs.
Era 3: 2015–2019, Close Calls and Big Scores
- March 2015, Hamilton. Mahmudullah scored 128*, the highest by a Bangladesh player in World Cup history. Bangladesh made 288/7. Martin Guptill hit a century and New Zealand won with seven balls and three wickets left. Shakib took 4/55.
- March 2016, Kolkata. Mustafizur Rahman took 5/22, his first T20I five-for. Yet Bangladesh were bowled out for 70. Grant Elliott and Ish Sodhi took three wickets each.
- January 2017, Wellington. Shakib scored 217 and Mushfiqur Rahim 159. They added 359 together. Bangladesh declared at 595/8. New Zealand still won by seven wickets. Tom Latham made 177 and Williamson an unbeaten 104. No team had ever won a Test after conceding 595 in the first innings.
- June 2017, Cardiff. Bangladesh chased 266 and were 33/4. Then Shakib (114) and Mahmudullah (102*) added 224. It is the biggest partnership for any wicket in Bangladesh’s ODI history. It also knocked New Zealand out.
- February–March 2019. Tamim Iqbal hit 126 at Hamilton. Then New Zealand piled up 715/6 declared, their highest Test total. Williamson scored 200* and Jeet Raval (132) and Latham added 254 for the first wicket. At the 2019 World Cup, Ross Taylor made 82 on his 400th international appearance and New Zealand won by two wickets.
- The third Test of that tour was cancelled after the terror attack in Christchurch on 15 March 2019.
Era 4: 2021–2023, Bangladesh Break the Barrier
- March 2021. New Zealand won the ODI and T20I series 3-0 at home.
- September 2021. Bangladesh won a five-match T20I series 3-2, their first T20I series win over New Zealand. In game one, New Zealand were bowled out for 60, their lowest T20I total against Bangladesh.
- January 2022, Mount Maunganui. Ebadot Hossain took 6/46 in the second innings. Bangladesh had made 458 (Mominul 88, Litton Das 86, Mahmudul Hasan Joy 78). They won by eight wickets. It was their first win in New Zealand in any format.
- January 2022, Christchurch. Latham scored 252 and New Zealand declared at 521/6. Litton Das hit 102 in the follow-on. Ross Taylor ended his Test career by taking the last wicket.
- October 2023, Chennai. Williamson returned from injury with 78. Daryl Mitchell scored 89* and Lockie Ferguson took 3/49.
- November–December 2023. In Sylhet, Taijul Islam took ten wickets in the match (10-184). Najmul Hossain Shanto became the first Bangladeshi to score a century on captaincy debut. Bangladesh won by 150 runs. At Mirpur, Ajaz Patel took 6/57 and Glenn Phillips made 87 and 40*. It was New Zealand’s first win in Bangladesh since 2008.
- December 2023, in New Zealand. Bangladesh bowled New Zealand out for 98 at Napier and won by nine wickets. It was their first ODI win in New Zealand. They also won their first T20I there four days later.
Era 5: 2025–2026, New Faces, Same Fight
- February 2025, Rawalpindi. Rachin Ravindra hit 112 off 105 balls. Michael Bracewell took four wickets. New Zealand won by five wickets. The result also knocked hosts Pakistan out.
- April–May 2026. New Zealand toured with several first-choice players away at the IPL and PSL. Bangladesh won the ODI series 2-1, their third straight home ODI series win. Nahid Rana was Player of the Series. The T20Is ended 1-1 after one washout.
Expert Insight (editorial analysis): Pitches decide this rivalry. Of New Zealand’s 14 Test wins, 10 came at home, where seam and bounce help. Bangladesh’s two Test wins came by two different roads: swing at Mount Maunganui and spin at Sylhet. Bangladesh also won 10 of their 13 ODIs against New Zealand at home. Slow, low surfaces are the Tigers’ best friend.
ICC Matches Between the Teams
Big tournaments tell a clear story. In 11 ICC meetings, New Zealand have won 10. Bangladesh’s one win, at Cardiff in 2017, is among the finest moments in their ICC history.

Expert Opinion
Former Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza once said the team finally stopped treating New Zealand as unbeatable after the 2022 Test win. New Zealand coach Gary Stead has repeatedly praised Bangladesh’s home record and warned his players never to take them lightly. Both views match the numbers we see today.
Quick Review of the Rivalry
The New Zealand National Cricket Team Vs Bangladesh National Cricket Team Timeline is no longer a one-way street. New Zealand still hold the historical edge, but Bangladesh have won Tests away, ODIs at home and T20Is on both sides of the world. Every new series adds another chapter that feels fresher than the last.

Conclusion
The New Zealand National Cricket Team Vs Bangladesh National Cricket Team Timeline is a story in three acts. First came the Black Caps’ easy wins. Then came the Tigers’ breakthroughs in 2010, 2017, 2022 and 2023. Now comes a fairer fight, with Bangladesh winning the 2026 ODI series.
New Zealand still lead everywhere: 14 Tests, 35 ODIs and 16 T20Is. But Bangladesh Vs New Zealand is no longer a guaranteed result. The next chapter will be worth the wait.
